Station Details
It would be too difficult to represent details of station openings and closings of all Victorian country railway stations, as well as name changes, on an A1 sized poster.
This section of the website is dedicated to providing this information – lines with station information are listed alphabetically, and stations with information are listed alphabetically within each line section (rather than in station order).
The dates shown relate to the provision of passenger services, but do not account for breaks in service due to accidents, natural disasters, industrial action and the like.
The line details on the printed map provide operating details for railway lines – in general freight services persisted longer than passenger services.
Information is generally sourced from Weekly Notice Extracts 1894-1994 published by Alan Jungwirth and Keith Lambert in 1996. For information on station openings and closings prior to 1894, I have used an unpublished manuscript entitled Victorian Railways Gazateer (sic) of Lines, Stations and Sidings Including Opening and Closing Dates and Name Changes prepared by Langley and Whitehead in 1996. To fill in gaps in these publications, I’ve used the notices published in the Argus newspaper relating to service changes, which can be searched using the National Library of Australia’s excellent Trove service.
If you would like to contribute any information to this section you are welcome to do so via trainsandtram’s Facebook page.

The Powelltown tramway was owned by the Powelltown sawmill and while its primary role was to move sawn timber from the mill, it operated a timetabled service for passengers, and carried goods as a common carrier. It was eventually extended to connect with timber tramways in the upper Latrobe River valley via a tunnel opened in 1925. The tunnel provided shelter during bushfires and saved many lives.
The Powelltown tramway is the only timber tramway depicted in the map because it operated like a railway line – in its early years there was pressure for the Victorian Government to buy out the company and operate the line.
Only the Yarra Junction –Powelltown section had a timetabled passenger service. It is possible that trains stopped for passengers at other sidings along the line – only the stations with passenger waiting facilities are listed.
The date of closure is that of the Black Friday bushfires – there is no evidence that passenger services resumed after this point, although the last train ran on 31/7/1944.

Port Welshpool
Opened on or after 26/6/1905
Closed on or before 1/1/1941
The Welshpool Jetty tramway was primarily built to transport fish from Port Welshpool. A passenger service operated and was the only passenger service in Victoria (outside Melbourne) to operate using horse power. Exact dates of operation are not known – a timetable for the service is shown in Bradshaw’s Guide for about 1905 and in the June 1928 Victorian Railways public timetable, so the passenger service must have operated for a considerable time.
